As an ecological and biodiversity consultancy, Kew Reach recognises that the way it operates should reflect the principles it advises on. The aim is to keep the environmental footprint of the business as low as practicable while still delivering work of the standard clients expect.
 

Travel is the most significant source of emissions for a small advisory practice, so it is treated as the first priority. The team works remotely by default and uses video meetings wherever a site visit or face-to-face session is not essential to the quality of the work. Where travel is needed, rail is preferred over air and car for journeys within the UK and to nearby European destinations, and trips are combined where possible to reduce the number of journeys. International fieldwork is planned carefully, with local partners and specialists engaged where they can provide the required expertise on the ground.
 

Kew Reach makes use of shared and flexible workspaces, reducing the energy, materials, and overheads associated with a standalone premises and encourages collaboration with other organisations. Day-to-day operations are largely digital, which keeps printing and paper use to a minimum.
 

These are practical steps rather than finished targets. Kew Reach will continue to review its approach as the business grows, with a view to measuring its emissions more formally and identifying further reductions over time.
